Frost Strikes at Red River

FROST AT QUAKER STATE 100
By Mitch Tasker

Frost in July? Not a chance, you’d say, but you can never count Lawton,Okla.’s Kris Frost out as the MSR late models took on Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas for the third annual running of the Quaker State100, July 25th. Poll sitter Michael Cecil from Henrietta, Texas, in his first late model event and a regular in the sportsman class at Red River, led the first ninety-six laps as a battle for second raged close behind. A six car train that included Midland, Texas’ Junior Robertson,Odessa Texas driver John David, Mark Coleman from Wichita Falls, Frost and Edmond, Okla.’s Bryan Waldroop dueled the first twenty five circuits before the yellow flew for Dennis Terpstra’s spin, after contact with David, as he was being lapped, sending David to the pits with a broken radiator. On the restart, Robertson made his move for the top spot getting inside Cecil in turn three only to loose the rear of the car, bringing out the second yellow on lap thirty-one. Two more caution periods for spins involving Dallas, Texas’ Dave Daniels slowed the pace before the race settled into a seven car train on a slick, one grove surface until the halfway break. The second half started just where the first left off, with Cecil out front followed by Coleman, Frost and Waldroop. Robertson was back to fourth, only taking eighteen laps to come from the rear, and Bobby Kolar from OKC fifth. The next fifteen laps saw Frost take over second from Coleman and a couple of solo spins as the top five began to get a little racey with the laps winding down. Laps seventy-nine through ninety-four looked as if the top five where tied together, before Frost moved Cecil over with a slight bump getting into turn one of lap ninety-six taking the lead and the win. Cecil held on for second while Robertson took third, Coleman fourth and Kolar fifth. “I thought I could beat him. I was having to let off early. I don’t know what happened down here, I may have bumped him. He got a little squirrelly”, said Frost in a post race interview. Cecil said, “I had a little help, but that’s Ok, I was going to do the same to him, but I couldn’t get close enough with only three remaining.” This was Frost’s first MSR win, putting him in a position to take the MSR points title. The next MSR event will be at Sooner International Raceway(580-482-2754) on Sept. 6th. See ya in the pits.
